The Problem With Drug Patents In America π #shorts #pharma #patent #pharmaceutical #podcast
Savva Kerdemelidis brilliantly breaks down what we mean when we say that a pharma company is "evergreening" a drug.
This week's episode of Self-Funded with Spencer is focused on fixing the ways that drugs are developed, and a huge part of that involves moving away from just selling which drugs are patentable.
Pharma companies will patent a drug, sell it at a markup, then when the patent is about to run out and the drug will go generic, they introduce a new formulation that they can patent and heavily market it. The generic drug is still available, but often won't get prescribed, even when the generic is equal to, or sometimes more effective than, the new drug.
